Frequently Asked Questions
Q: HOW IS TAEKWONDO DIFFERENT FROM KARATE AND KUNG FU?
A. Karate styles, which originate in Japan, value strong linear hand techniques and low linear kicks. Kung Fu styles, which originate in China, value circular motion in both hand techniques and kicking. Taekwondo incorporates the linear movements of Karate styles and the circular movements of Kung Fu styles. While Taekwondo is considered a dynamic kicking art that features jump kicks, spin kicks and jump spin kicks, many dynamic hand techniques are utilized as well.
Q: AT WHAT AGE, CAN CHILDREN BECOME MASTER JIM'S TAEKWONDO STUDENTS?
A: At Master Jim's Taekwondo, children must be 4 years old to join.
Q: AM I TOO OLD TO BECOME A STUDENT?
A: While our students range from 4 - 54 years old, there is no age limit. Your attitude and outlook is much more important than your age.

Q: WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO BEGIN?
A: Students need only to purchase a Taekwondo uniform, which is available through Master Jim.
Q: WILL I GET KICKED? IS THERE A LOT OF CONTACT?
A: Beginners use target bags and paddles as they learn basic kicking and hand techniques and gradually move on to non-contact sparring. Once students promote from white belt to yellow belt, students use protective gear (headgear, mouth piece, chest gear, forearm protectors, shin/instep protectors, optional gloves, protective groin cup for males) as they learn how to spar because they do make contact with each other. We value strategy over brute power. We teach sparring as a game of physical chess in as safe an environment as possible.
Q: DO I HAVE TO SPAR?
A: Our curriculum requires sparring because it is a fundamental part of Taekwondo. Sparring helps students develop strategy, agility, control, timing, speed, and power. No sparring is permitted prior to the yellow belt level.
Q: HOW OFTEN CAN I PROMOTE TO THE NEXT BELT RANK?
A: Promotion exams are held every 3 months. In order to be a promotion exam candidate, a student must attendance 30 to 36 classes and also pass the pre-test, which is given during regularly scheduled class approximately four weeks prior to the exam.
Q: HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO BECOME A BLACK BELT?
A: There is a chance between possessing a black belt and being a Black Belt. Master Jim's Taekwondo Club is not a Black Belt factory. We do not guarantee that students will reach the rank of Black Belt in 24 or 36 months, or in any other arbitrary period of time. How could we when every student is unique and develops according to his/her natural growth rate? That said, some of our MJT adults and youths who began our program at age 10 or older have been able to move from white to Black Belt in 3-4 years. Students who began instruction at age 9 or under have typically taken longer to move through the belt ranks.
Testimonials from some of our Clients
My kids are more focused since we started Master Jims taekwondo. They are learning quickly and getting along together, better than they ever have. Highly recommended!
My grandson has been going to Master Jims for a year and two months. They are so good with him. He has some disabilities and it takes longer for him to get the moves down, but Master Jim and Master Abraham are great. They are so patient with him, they never give up or get discourage and they don't let Michael give up on himself either. Teaching the rules and values of the Dojang and the Tenets of Taekwondo has helped Michael in class as well as in his personal life. We love it here.
My son Tristan began attending Master Jim's summer camp program in 2014 and enjoyed it so much he decided he wanted to begin taking lessons. Since taking taekwondo lessons at Master Jim's he has become more confident, disciplined, respectful, and gained better self control. He has become a better listener and strives to be successful in taekwondo and all areas of his life.
All 3 of our kids began attending this summer. All have enjoyed it and are growing to be more self assured and confident. The program is well run and appropriate to kids, both instructors are very good in dealing with the kids and keeping them focused and moving through the drills.
Very much recommended.
Master Jim's taekwondo is, to me, one of the best ways to learn the art of taekwondo and also build a connection with the taekwondo family
My son and daughter are both enrolled. Not only are they learning the fundamentals, they are building character that is insurmountable to any other sport. Master Jims Tae Kwon Do is world class. Thank you.
My daughter loves taking classes at Master Jim's Taekwondo. We have felt welcomed from the first day walking in the door. It shows that Master Jim cares about his students and the community around him. I highly recommend Master Jim's Taekwondo for anyone looking.
My son has been at Master Jim's Taekwondo for nearly two years now. He has grown as a young boy due to the 'Tenents of Taekwondo' that are being taught to the students. I am grateful for Master Jim, Grand Master Abraham and all his teaching staff for taking my son under their wings and teaching him what he needs to know to become a great young man. They make us feel and treat us like family. I would definitely recommend anyone who love a family oriented sport to come join our family! Thanks a bunch for all that you do for all the students.
My grandson has been with Master Jim for 20 months. His (my grandson) flexibility is amazing, and he feels that he can defend himself now if he needs too. The Instructor's are very good with the children and we enjoy working with all of them.
Ruben Elliott has become a very good student he listens better to now and he does his chores and his homework without any complications. He has become more self-assured in the things that he does. and demonstrates better self control
