Reasons for Taekwondo Forms & Patterns

In Korean, Taekwondo forms are generally known as Poomse. Poomse can also be spelled as Poomsae, Pumsae, etc. In addition, Taekwondo forms are known as patterns, teul or tul, hyeong, hyung, etc. In Japanese martial arts such as Karate, forms and patterns are known as kata.

Taekwondo forms are used to practice techniques (i.e. kicking combinations) as well as for improving strength & conditioning, balance, focus/concentration, etc.
